Our hearing tells us of unseen, or in a distant. Everything vibrates, and sound passes through and around us all the time. Sound is a critical environmental signifier.

Shell Road Trail

Third “walk.listen.record” sound workshop series was at Shell Road Trail in Richmond, unceded, traditional territories of xÊ·mÉ™θkÊ·É™yÌ“É™m (Musqueam) nation on Wednesday, July 26th.

The Shell Road Trail is 6.3 Km out and back trail which is an easy route, lined with tall trees and shrubs. This long interior trail has a distinctly rural feel making it a unique walking experience in an urban city centre. Tree failure can naturally occur especially during wind storms and inclement weather. It is a popular trail for hiking, trail running, and walking.

For the sound walk workshop, we gathered in the parking lot which was the starting point to our walk. We used my mini van to gather. Workshop started with an introduction to the project and workshop. Each participant introduced themselves and shared why they were interested in this workshop. After a brief introduction to soundscape and microphones, participants started to explore the park and record the sound. During the workshop, participants experienced soundscapes through field microphones while walking. They had a chance to listen to their environment more closely. It was a slow paste walk with many stops. Through the walk we heard the sound of birds and traffic.

After this hands-on recording, participants shared their experiences and stories.

You can experience the park by watching digital stories in 360 environments that were created with recorded sound in the workshop with participants’ permission. Thank you, Brigitte, Erika and Lianne for joining the workshop and sharing your experiences and stories.
