The ecological soundscape has dramatically changed as humans have interfered in the natural world through resource extraction, habitat destruction, and noise from our ever-increasing transportation and population.

Next “walk.listen.record” sound workshop series was at Garry Point Park, unceded, traditional territories of xÊ·mÉ™θkÊ·É™yÌ“É™m (Musqueam) nation on Wednesday, July 13th.

Garry Point Park is large waterfront park, located at the southwest tip of Richmond, close to historic Steveston Village. While walking through the park look for the Kuno Garden, a Japanese style memorial garden, and Scotch Pond, a heritage moorage site. The second leg of the trail travels along the West Dyke and provides spectacular views of the Fraser River, Gulf Islands and Coastal Mountains. Running adjacent to the dyke is Sturgeon Banks, an estuary that provides habitat and stopover sites for a large variety of birds and waterfowl.

Inside Garry Point Park, you will find several bays with inshore beaches that are surrounded by rock piles. These shallow bays are usually productive because when the tidal current is strong, most residential fish hide in them.  Wetlands and migrating birds.

Workshop started with an introduction to the project and workshop. Each participant introduced themselves and shared why they were interested in this workshop. After a brief introduction to soundscape and microphones, participants started to explore the park and record the sound. During the workshop, participants experienced soundscapes through field microphones while walking. They had a chance to listen to their environment more closely. It was a slow paste walk with many stops.

After this hands-on recording, participants shared their experiences and stories.

You can experience the park by watching digital stories in 360 environments that were created with recorded sound in the workshop with participants’ permission. Thank you, Dora, Helene and Alma for joining the workshop and sharing your experiences and stories.
